TRACK FAILURE

-

On January, 18, 1977, at about 8.10am, a packed train from Mount

Victoria, in the Blue Mountains, to Sydney, derailed at Granville.

At least 469 people were on board. The train then crashed into the Bold Street bridge, which spanned the tracks.

The train tipped on its side and the 470-tonne bridge, as well as some cars on it, crashed onto the carriages below.

An inquiry found the main cause of the disaster was the poor condition of the track.

In total, 84 people – including an unborn baby – were killed and more than 213 injured.
