The power of HALF
Here are some quick and easy ways to cut your expenditure in half – literally!
SMILE SAVER
Forget those toothpaste ads that tell you to slather your brush with a huge glob of paste.
Save money by listening to the experts who advise that you only need a pea-sized amount to get your teeth sparkling clean.
For kids under three, a smear the size of a grain of rice is plenty.
THAT’S HANDY
Stretch the suds when refilling your hand-soap dispenser by only filling the bottle halfway. Top up with water and give it a shake before using.
MIX YOUR MAKEUP Foundation can cost a pretty penny, but you can save by using just half the amount and mixing it with an inexpensive face moisturiser.
You’ll get a light coverage similar to more expensive BB creams. Try using a cream that also contains a sunscreen to protect your face from UV rays.
MIND THE MEAT
We’re a country of meatlovers. On average we consume about 250g each day, which is far more than the recommended 350g per week, adding a hefty pricehike to your grocery bill.
Save cash by halving the meat in your casserole, spag bol and burger recipes and substituting with vegetables, beans or lentils instead.
LAUNDRY ADDS UP More washing liquid or powder doesn’t mean cleaner clothes. In fact, using too much, not only costs more but soap can remain on clothes causing skin irritations and attracting more dirt.
According to Aussie cleaning expert Shannon Lush, you only need a quarter of the recommended quantity for top loaders and one eighth for front loaders.
Save even more by using a capful of white vinegar instead of fabric softener! Experiment with your washing and machine and see what works best for you.
HAIRRAISING SAVINGS Less is more when washing your hair. Halving the amount of shampoo and conditioner you use saves you money on products and, if you colour your hair, have a perm or use a straightening treatment, it can lengthen their effectiveness.
