Budgeting for your furry friends

-

Almost two-thirds of us own a pet, but they don’t come cheap! On average, dog owners spend $1475 a year on their pooch, and cat owners spend $1029.

Here are some tips on managing the cost of caring for your pet.

SHOP ONLINE

Many online pet stores have loyalty programs that reduce costs if you order regularly.

This can save you big money on food, flea and tick prevention and other supplies.

Free shipping is often offered when you spend over a certain amount, so why not team up with some pet-owning friends and place a bulk order?

HEALTHY DIET

While it might be tempting to buy the cheapest food on the market, small savings can mean hefty costs later.

Good nutrition and maintaining a healthy weight can reduce the chances of expensive medical conditions down the track. Talk to your vet about your pet’s needs.

MEDICATION COSTS

Many pets need regular medication, just like people.

Instead of paying top dollar through your vet, you can sometimes find the same generic-branded medication over the counter at the chemist or supermarket.

Cheaper prescription medication may also be available online.

PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE

Taking a few precautions can help avoid expensive vet visits.

Walking your dog on a lead, keeping your cat inside at night, maintaining a secure yard and restraining them in the car are all good habits.

Immunisations, worming, tick treatment, and having a dental health routine, can save big bucks down the track.

VET BILLS

Pet insurance can offer peace of mind by covering between 65 to 85 per cent of vet fees, but limits, excesses and what’s covered varies between policies. Premiums can also be expensive and increase as pets age, so do your research.

Alternatively, your vet may offer a payment plan or use a service such as VetPay.

Charities and foundations in your state, such as Pet Medical Crisis in Victoria and the RSPCA in NSW, may be able to help those under financial stress.
