Manufacturers’ work declines over August
AUSTRALIA’S fourth largest employment sector, manufacturing, has experienced an overall decline in activity in September, the Australian Industry Group Australian Performance of Manufacturing Index reveals.
It shows food and beverages, wood products and furniture and miscellaneous manufacturers were the hardest hit sub-sectors of the industry in August.
But in a promising sign of growth, the subsectors of paper, printing and publishing and textiles, clothing and footwear all expanded over the same period.
Manufacturing employs about 945,000 people nationwide or 8 per cent of Australia’s workers.
