CAFES, restaurants and takeaways will be one of the strongest areas for retail jobs growth in 2013, says Australian Retailers Association executive director Russell Zimmerman.
New Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show jobs in this sector grew 5.3 per cent year-on-year in the 12 months to November 2012 – the best performing part of the retail industry.
Food retailing was the next best performer (4.5 per cent growth) and household goods was the worst performer (-2.1 per cent).
Retail is the second largest employer in Australia with 1.2 million people, behind healthcare and social assistance.
‘‘Food and, in particular, coffee shops, takeaways and the like will be some of the biggest areas of growth in 2013,’’ he says.
‘‘Beyond general retail shop assistants in 2013 there will be opportunities for human resources and occupational health and safety as well as support roles for online retail.’’
