Homestead with historic charm
An 1800s-built homestead steeped in history sits amid 108ha of land, writes Ben Hyde.
ALONG search for a unique Adelaide Hills property came to a halt when the vendors found Cobbs Hill at Oakbank about 22 years ago. With 108ha of arable undulating land over three titles and draped with history, including a late 1800s-built homestead, Cobbs Hill ticked all the boxes.
‘‘We scoured the Adelaide Hills looking for a unique, stunning property that was large and close to the city,’’ the vendors say.
‘‘We found it at Cobbs Hill, which included valleys, a creek, waterholes, a large house and what were the start of really good gardens.’’
During their 22 years at the property, the vendors have upgraded it throughout.
‘‘We have expanded and renovated the house, and extended the gardens,’’ the vendors say.
‘‘We’ve just progressively turned it into a top property.
‘‘We’ve put in new fencing, sunk really good bores right across the property and established 25 acres of award-winning vineyards.’’
The vendors say the property has plenty of interesting history.
‘‘It’s a big old homestead that was originally a Cobb & Co house and then extended a couple of times,’’ they say.
‘‘Cobb & Co used to spell a lot of their horses there in the old days.’’
The homestead boasts a new kitchen and sunroom, four bedrooms, including the master with a large dressing room and ensuite with spa, and views over the English-style garden grounds. The property also features a 1996-built, three-bedroom manager’s residence on a separate title with its own road frontage.
About 10ha of the property has established sauvignon blanc, chardonnay and riesling grapevines. The rest of the property is undulating arable land.
‘‘It is a legitimate primary production property because of the income it can generate,’’ the vendors say.
‘‘We have great memories from winning awards from the vineyards and producing top-quality beef cattle.’’
The vendors say it has been a privilege to enjoy and improve Cobbs Hill.
‘‘For a while after we bought it, we had our children living there and it was a great place for children,’’ they say.
‘‘We’ve had the same joy out of our grandchildren coming to the property.
‘‘We’ll miss living in that kind of space and such a glorious environment. People come up from the city and can’t believe that we have that environment only 25 minutes away.’’ Features: Up to five-bedroom renovated weatherboard home with open-plan living and valley views. 25 Blanche Pde, Hindmarsh Island Agent: Brock Harcourts Goolwa, ph 8555 5488, Jayne Corless 0413 580 986.
