Vine combination of heart and soul
This home will truly elevate your spirits, writes Tom Bowden.
THE McLaren Vale wine region is renowned for its quality grapes and panoramic views. And an elevated property at Blewitt Springs offers both, say vendors James and Carol.
The home was architecturally designed and built in 1999 to offer two levels of living space.
It features four bedrooms, the master with a walk-in robe and ensuite with a separate toilet, corner shower, double vanity and a spa bath.
The open-plan kitchen adjoins the family room and features an island bench with breakfast bar and gas cooktop, and stainless steel appliances including a wall-mounted oven and microwave, and an integrated dishwasher. It also has a walk-in pantry and a separate utility room.
‘‘We wanted the ability to be able to entertain and have friends and family visit us, and the home was designed to accommodate that,’’ James says.
The ground floor also features an open-plan dining and living room, a separate laundry, outdoor entertaining areas and a triple garage with workbench and storage space.
There are three bedrooms and a bathroom on the upper level.
James says the couple spared no expense on the home which has french doors, Italian tiling, a slowcombustion heater with fire surround, raked ceilings, a Mintaro slate hearth, a decorative timber handrail, circular wine cellar with staircase, Bose surround system and jarrah flooring.
‘‘We knew what we wanted and when we had the opportunity to design our own house we put a lot of thought into it,’’ James says.
‘‘We’ve put a lot of heart and soul into this place and we’re really proud of it and happy to be moving on to the next phase of our lives, but it will be sad to see a part of us go as well, because we put so much into that house.
‘‘Because we’re on a hill, you get to see the changes in the seasons and the sky rolling in, and we’ll miss that.’’
The home is set on a 4.4ha block and features a 2.4ha Shiraz vineyard, professionally designed and planted in 2000 using cuttings from d’Arenberg’s old vine shiraz.
‘‘It’s small enough to do it yourself but it’s also big enough that you could get a contractor to look after it for you,’’ James says. The home has an outdoor drystone oven, olive trees, a 4mL dam and a three-bay shed.
