Encounter proves very entertaining
It’s close to the beach and designer-built for a crowd, writes Tom Bowden.
AN Encounter Bay property has been a much-loved home away from home for the Greven family. Tony and Jane Greven built the home in 2008 and say they were immediately taken by the home’s location less than 100m from the beach.
‘‘We had a young family back then and we thought it was perfect and so we bought the block and eventually built the home that we always wanted on it,’’ Mr Greven says. ‘‘From the moment you walk in the door a calm comes over you, it’s just so relaxing.’’
The home, which Mr Greven says the couple spared no expense building, features four bedrooms.
The master is on the upper floor, which joins a main two-way bathroom.
‘‘We’ve got extra mattresses that we keep under the beds, so the kids just sleep on the floor in the family room while the adults sleep in the bedrooms - we would usually comfortably sleep about 14 people there,’’ Mr Greven says.
‘‘We got an architect to design the home and it was all about entertaining, and even if you are cooking in the kitchen you’re not left out of conversations, so it’s very easy to live in.
‘‘You could have a dozen people upstairs and not feel crowded at all.’’
The home features an open-plan kitchen with island bench, high ceilings, a garage with room for a 16ft boat, separate surround sound systems in both the upstairs and downstairs living areas, a 1.6kw solar system and a balcony. Mr Greven says, although built as a holiday home, the family had not hired out the house as a holiday rental.
‘‘We’re very proud of it and couldn’t bring ourselves to take the risk of letting others mistreat it, so it’s as good as new and it was really well built,’’ Mr Greven says.
Mr Greven says the home provides an ideal central base for coastal escapes and golfing getaways.
‘‘I sometimes go up there with mates and we’ll play golf at Mt Compass on the way, stay the night and then play at McCracken in the morning and and then play at Normanville on the way home,’’ Mr Greven says.
