Mix business with pleasure in this Hills hideaway

A versatile Balhannah home offers an escape from city life, and could make a great business

- Tom Bowden

A Balhannah home is an ideal lifestyle property and has the potential to be used as a profitable hospitality venue, its vendors say.

Mark Ker and partner Harvey Stanton bought the property three years ago, attracted by its location, potential and the opportunity to transform it into something lovely.

“We really like that every window you look out of you look out over your own property and you can’t see neighbours,” Mr Ker says.

“We really love the cellar door part and that big shed that we’ve set up so that it can be used as a wedding venue. We’ve had a wedding here and we use the cellar door for parties, like my daughter’s 18th and Christmas lunches and things like that. It was originally a cellar door, but we just use it as a lifestyle property.

“It was pretty barren when we got here but we’ve transformed this whole property. We could really see the potential to do up the cellar door and turn this place into a wedding venue and we could see that we could really take this home into the next level.”

The 1868-built three-bedroom stone homestead has been renovated throughout to offer that idyllic old-meets-new lifestyle, while an adjacent stone cottage offers another bedroom, making the property ideal for use as a bed and breakfast, an intergenerational family home or one for a family with teenagers. It sits on a 31.57ha allotment with fenced paddocks, four dams and a creek, a 43.5mL water licence, two bores, a stone cellar door and a large shed.

“It’s in a great position as we’re only 20-minutes from Burnside, and there’s an abundance of water here – just oodles of it,” Mr Ker says. “The house is great too, it was one of the first houses in the Hills and we have certainly placed our own touch on it. It’s a great family home and works really well for family life.

“If someone wants to enjoy the Hills lifestyle, this is the spot. Years ago this was farming land, and now it’s perfect for people who want a few horses and some cattle as well. I’ve renovated a few properties and quality is always important to me, and now I’m onto my next one – again in Balhannah because we just love it up here.”
