Entertain in style in the heart of the Adelaide Hills

You’d be hard pressed to find a nicer renovated character home than this Crafers West property

- Tom Bowden

A Crafers West home has been beautifully transformed into a grand entertainer and offers a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of working life. Lyn Edwards and Robert Bryce bought the property in 1989, falling in love with it before even seeing the home.

“I fell in love with the trees down the driveway, I fell in love with the garden, and the house really appealed to us because it was very elegant and even though it was built in Victorian times it was Georgian in style,” Ms Edwards says. “My husband loved that it had a cellar because he has an interest in wine, and we were looking for a tennis court because we love tennis.”

The couple have since renovated the property throughout, sparing no expense to create a truly breathtaking old-meets-new family home that was respectful to its heritage.

“We didn’t really structurally change the front of the home, except for some improvements, but, like a lot of older houses, the back of the home was a dog’s dinner and wasn’t utilising the view at all, so we got Rob Williams of Williams Burton Archects in – he’s renowned for sympathetically restoring old houses. He took the back of the house off and we put a great big veranda along there to match the front, and we rebuilt the kitchen and laundry, and turned one of the bedrooms into a walk-in robe and an ensuite. Since then we’ve renovated the summer house in the garden and turned an old shed into a garage, and more recently, renovated a bathroom. We were keen to keep its heritage, but then we wanted a modern home as well, and we’ve really achieved that.”

The home has three bedrooms, several living areas, a summer house, a tennis court and is surrounded by established gardens.

“We use the summer house by the tennis court for entertaining a lot,” she says. “We’ve got about six or seven eating venues I’ve counted around the property – we hosted my daughter’s wedding here a few years ago and put a marquee on the tennis court – it was great.”

The couple are now downsizing and Ms Edwards says the home would be ideal for a family who love to entertain, or those who want a taste of the Hills lifestyle.
