LAKEFRONT LUXURY

Go west and lap up a slice of the good life

-

Entertaining is as effortless as the lifestyle in this stunning two-storey West Lakes home. Owned by vendors Vicki and Paul Alvaro since it was built 29 years ago, the lakefront property has provided an ideal setting for family living with the absolute lot.

Mrs Alvaro says the 44 McDonald Grove home has been a perfect place to raise their two sons, with the combination of location and luxury offering a resort-style feel.

“That’s what they say about living at West Lakes – that it’s like a yearround holiday,” she says. “Especially when the boys were younger, they loved the lakes – boating and fishing and playing in the rocks out the front.

“And just sitting there, watching the dragon boats and other people out on the water in their boats, is quite relaxing.”

Mrs Alvaro says the five-bedroom residence has proved to be an ideal family entertainer.

“We renovated about seven years ago and there’s now a pool and an outdoor kitchen and it’s just lovely,” she says. “We’ve had lots of family gatherings here – birthdays, Christmases and Easter and things like that.

“The boys went to school on the other side of the city and their friends would often come around and really enjoy it because for a lot of them it was different to where they lived. This house was like a holiday for them.”

Built to meet the demands of contemporary family life, a flexible floorplan offers two levels of luxury. First impressions – from either the street or the lake – are of a grand home that wants for nothing.

Entry through the home’s foyer opens to a sweeping staircase leading to a four-bedroom upper level. All bedrooms have built-in robes and the sumptuous master suite also boasts one of the residence’s three marble bathrooms – and superb water views.

Downstairs, the light-filled openplan living and dining zone complements the contemporary kitchen, which is complete with stone surfaces and integrated appliances. A sunlit breakfast bar offers pool and lake views. The lower level also incorporates a handy fifth bedroom/study, a guest bathroom, family-sized laundry and games room.

The alfresco entertaining area boasts an inbuilt barbecue kitchen, stainless range, stone tops and integrated appliances – a perfect place to relax after a dip in the sparkling pool.

Quality fixtures and fittings include a marble fireplace, new drapes and a remote-controlled chandelier to allow easier cleaning.

The city is a short commute via bus

or train, while the seaside attractions of Tennyson and Semaphore are also nearby. With West Lakes’ mix of shopping – including Westfield – and eateries all within easy reach, Mrs Alvaro says the property will “definitely” suit a young family who want to entertain and relax.

Mrs Alvaro says the home’s sense of space is a definite feature.

“You could easily have three generations in the home because there’s the three bathrooms and we’ve got a downstairs study but you could easily make that into another bedroom,” she says, adding the property had been a tremendous haven during last year’s COVID-19 lockdowns.

“I felt fortunate that we had the amount of room we did. It’s big – and there’s plenty of space for kids to run around in. The outside area’s good. We’ve got two dogs, and they just sit out on the lake side and run around. They love it here.”

However, with their sons having long left, the couple are looking to downsize to a new build at Henley Beach. “It’s really just too big for the two of us – we live in about two rooms now basically,” Mrs Alvaro laughs. “But we’ll really miss the home ... we’ve been here for about 30 years, we’ve got really nice neighbours and it’s a good community.

“We’ll be sad to see it go but we’re not getting any younger – so we’re really just at the next stage of our lives.”
