BARMERA Coun­try Club is a fine ex­am­ple of ac­com­mo­da­tion not hav­ing to be the flash­est to en­sure a mem­o­rable, and rec­om­mend­able, stay.

Don’t be mis­taken – that doesn’t mean it is a try-hard dive. Far from it. The apart­ment-style rooms nes­tled in the grounds of the Barmera Golf Course are clean, com­fort­able and quaint.

Our home for two nights – with four adults and a tod­dler – was in a self­con­tained fam­ily room com­plete with two bed­rooms, kitchen, lounge and small din­ing area, bath­room (of course) and am­ple stor­age for our lug­gage and the all-im­por­tant golf clubs.

An out­door en­ter­tain­ing area, com­plete with our own bar­be­cue, made self-cater­ing that much eas­ier, but the com­plex also fea­tures a res­tau­rant with good qual­ity, af­ford­able meals, in­clud­ing break­fast.

There are two floodlit ten­nis courts a swim­ming pool and indoor heated spa, chil­dren’s play­ground and a grass volleyball court if you’re up for it and have the num­bers to play.

With a few days of play­ing golf at some of the River­land’s fan­cied cour­ses on our minds, it was a real treat to be able to spill out of our apart­ment and straight on to the first tee at the Barmera course. Be­cause it was so easy and the course so good we spent all our golf­ing time there.

But it was how we were wel­comed at the club that re­ally makes it a place I want to re­turn to. Hav­ing been “sold a pup” on our first ac­com­mo­da­tion book­ing which, upon ar­rival and in­spec­tion I de­ter­mined I would not house a dog in, we faced the prospect of head­ing straight back home as the re­gion was heav­ily booked with the River­land Field Days be­ing held.

Barmera Coun­try Club not only un­ex­pect­edly gave us a room im­me­di­ately, they did so at their usual room rate de­spite be­ing open to charge more be­cause of the de­mand. They ne­go­ti­ated with some­one al­ready booked in to the room to take on a smaller room, wel­comed us at the club and en­sured we were set­tled in quickly.

Whether or not they were aware of the poor ser­vice we’d just been given else­where and saw an op­por­tu­nity to make a good im­pres­sion with lit­tle ef­fort mat­ters not. They did make a good im­pres­sion, and that counts for much more than fancy ho­tel room fit­tings and fa­cil­i­ties you’re never likely to use.
