Novem­ber 1971. We pooled our fire­works with two other fam­i­lies. Three large boxes sat on the swing ready for ac­tion. Three re­spon­si­ble bank man­agers, be­ing “boys”, de­cided to try one bomb. It flared, they ditched it – into the box. Re­sult: one burnt swing seat, seven howl­ing chil­dren, one trau­ma­tised corgi and three very shirty wives.
