Believing the Lie Elizabeth George, Hodder & Stoughton, $32.99 Even more suspension of disbelief than usual is required in this latest adventure of aristocratic widower DI Thomas Lynley and his sartorially challenged sidekick, DS Barbara Havers. Lynley is commandeered to do some sensitive sleuthing among the aristocrats of the Lake District and takes his upper-crust friends the St Jameses along to help. Red-headed Deborah, smitten as ever with the lack-of-baby blues, makes a right hash of it all. There are several deaths and a lot of posturing. One can’t help wondering if this is really how the upper echelons behave, but equally it’s the private lives of the well-known characters that keep you reading, rather than the creaky, complicated, oddly dismissable plots.
