I am Half-sick of Shadows Alan Bradley, Orion, $32.99 Bradley’s original and entertaining sleuth is an 11-year-old with a passion for chemistry, particularly poisons. Flavia de Luce, her impoverished stately home, perpetually mourning father and bookish older sisters were introduced in The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie. Her fourth adventure begins when she decides to prove the existence of Father Christmas, but this radical experiment soon takes a back seat to the excitement of a film crew at Buckshaw. Filming has not even begun, however, before old enmities surface, a snowstorm turns Buckshaw into the classic “locked room” and observant Flavia is once again relishing the challenge of a cunning murderer.
