Secrets of a Lazy French Cook Marie-morgane Le Moël, Harpercollins, $29.99 Part cookbook but mainly memoir, Le Moël’s book puts to rest the myth that all Frenchwomen are assiduous in the kitchen. From her socialist upbringing through university and on to life as a journalist, she mixes the vignettes with delightfully down-toearth recipes: no mystifying method, no fancy equipment and no bafflingly exotic ingredients. The French bits are piquant enough but Le Moël really adds spice when she moves to Sydney. She serves up a sometimes acidic riposte to the Australian out-ofwater in France brigade: our unwritten beach etiquette, barbecues for Christmas (!), stodgy politics and the horrified reaction to foie gras. A light repast of insight and exclamation. Shelley Orchard *Special reader offer $19.95 at News Shop, 31 Waymouth St, city.
