The Cold, Cold Ground Adrian Mckinty, Allen & Unwin, $29.99 Prejudice is at the heart of Melbourne-based Irishman Mckinty’s new detective series. It’s set in Northern Ireland in 1981, at the height of the sectarian violence when IRA member Bobby Sands is on hunger strike. Sean Duffy is a Catholic detective sergeant in the protestant police force. What at first appears to be another case of an informer being killed by the IRA becomes the work of serial killer targeting homosexuals. But the more Duffy digs the more things are not what they seem – and after an incident in a men’s toilet, neither is Duffy. The plot is intricate, but the interminably bleak backdrop of riots, power cuts and gangsterism dressed up as a noble cause begin to pall. Ian Orchard
