Bloodland Alan Glynn, Faber, $29.99 Glynn flits around his plot like a hyper-caffeinated teen with attention deficit disorder in charge of the TV remote. It’s all a supertease and sometimes too coy, but eventually it all comes together and is satisfactorily resolved. In essence, journalist Jimmy Gilroy is writing a biography of a celebrity killed in a helicopter crash when he uncovers a conspiracy involving a former Irish prime minister, an Irish businessman and two American brothers; Clark Rundle, who heads a mining firm, and his brother J.J. a senator about to run for president. From Ireland to the Congo to New York the pace is relentless as Gilroy pulls a thread that unravels several lives while those involved try desperately to save themselves. Ian Orchard
