While I en­joyed Kathy’s Lette’s amus­ing piece on her son di­ag­nosed with autism spec­trum dis­or­der I chal­lenge her claim that “putting a spe­cial needs child in a main­stream school just doesn’t work. Chil­dren with spe­cial needs need spe­cial schools.” In South Australia, many young peo­ple with spe­cial needs have been in­cluded and catered for in their lo­cal school due to ex­cel­lent teach­ers and sup­port staff who have been able to tune into their unique gifts and strengths.
