The Shiny Guys Doug Macleod, Penguin, $17.95 Doug Macleod is best known for outrageously funny books like The Life of a Teenage Body-snatcher and Sister Madge’s Book of Nuns, so the reader should heed the dark cover of this one, and the publisher’s warning that it is “a serious book without many jokes”. Fifteen-year-old Colin’s conviction that he is responsible for the disappearance of his beloved younger sister has landed him in a psychiatric ward where he makes both steadfast friends and virulent enemies and negotiates with giant cockroaches hovering at the edges of his vision. He is also reading Kafka, and Macleod’s readers will get more out of the bleakly clever ending if they are familiar with the most famous of Kafka’s tropes. Katharine England
