Farther Away Jonathan Franzen, 4th Estate, $24.99 Few authors write with greater clarity than Franzen. It’s there in his intellectual approach and with every word he commits to the page. He is best known for his novels The Corrections and Freedom but Farther Away is a collection of essays, speeches and journalism from the past five years. The title essay is set on an island 800km off the coast of Chile. Ostensibly Franzen is there to pursue his passion for bird-watching but the essay evolves into an examination of his feelings on the suicide of his friend and fellow author, David Foster Wallace. Elsewhere there is a funny take on what technology has done to society, advice on how to write and a trip to China to see golf clubs being made. There is not a dull piece among them.
