The Advertiser - SA Weekend - - UP FRONT -

It must have been an amazing day. Fifty years ago, when Adelaide was a big, sleepy, country town, about half the population decided to turn out one Friday to see four musicians arrive at the airport and be driven into town.

Our city has never seen anything like it, before or since. Three hundred thousand people were estimated to have lined the streets that 1964 day to welcome The Beatles.

A case of desperate boredom or hunger for change? A mix of both, no doubt.

But some go further and, as Craig Cook reports today, credit the Fab Four with helping switch Adelaide on to the Swinging Sixties and the social changes that were soon to follow.
