REACHING FOR THE MOON (M)

The Advertiser - SA Weekend - - MOVIE REVIEWS -

Miranda Otto stars as Pulitzer Prizewinning poet Elizabeth Bishop, a fragile woman on the brink of falling apart while holidaying in Brazil in the 1950s. An intense attraction to famous architect Lota Soares (Gloria Pires) unlocks a strength of emotion Bishop never really knew she possessed, and rekindles a past weakness for booze she never quite left behind. What might have been a basic, by-the-numbers biopic is enhanced by the yin and yang of two dynamically disparate performances here. Together, Otto and Pires convey exactly how two people can get along like a house on fire while simultaneously driving each other up the wall.
