The number of births notified in South Australia in 2011 was 20,344 – 342 more than the previous year.
The number of women who gave birth was 20,043. The total fertility rate was 1.89 live births per woman.
803 teenage women gave birth. The teenage pregnancy rate of 30.6 per 1000 women in 2011 was the lowest rate recorded since 1970.
The mean age of women giving birth increased from 26.6 years in 1981 to 29.7 years in 2011, and, among first time mothers, from 24.4 years to 27.9 years. 99 per cent of women who gave birth had an ultrasound examination; 31 per cent had labour induced while another 20 per cent had spontaneous labour augmented; epidurals were used for pain relief during labour for 32 per cent of women, and 12 per cent had an episiotomy.
