The num­ber of births no­ti­fied in South Australia in 2011 was 20,344 – 342 more than the pre­vi­ous year.

The num­ber of women who gave birth was 20,043. The to­tal fer­til­ity rate was 1.89 live births per woman.

803 teenage women gave birth. The teenage preg­nancy rate of 30.6 per 1000 women in 2011 was the low­est rate recorded since 1970.

The mean age of women giv­ing birth in­creased from 26.6 years in 1981 to 29.7 years in 2011, and, among first time moth­ers, from 24.4 years to 27.9 years. 99 per cent of women who gave birth had an ul­tra­sound ex­am­i­na­tion; 31 per cent had labour in­duced while an­other 20 per cent had spon­ta­neous labour aug­mented; epidu­rals were used for pain re­lief dur­ing labour for 32 per cent of women, and 12 per cent had an epi­siotomy.
