Fight to lower gay pride flag
A MARION councillor is fighting a decision to permanently fly the rainbow flag at the council’s chambers, saying it “promotes homosexuality” and sends the wrong message to children.
Cr Jerome Appleby, who is set to raise the issue at tonight’s council meeting, said he would seek support from his colleagues to reverse the council’s decision earlier this month to fly the flag, which is a symbol of gay pride. “I don’t think it’s appropriate for the council to be promoting homosexuality when there’s a primary school up the road,” Cr Appleby said.
Councillor Bruce Hull, who supports the flag, said an offensive flyer against it was being distributed by unknown parties in the Marion area.
