Victory Test spinner dies


REG Ellis, the last survivor of the Victory Tests played by ex-servicemen immediatel­y after the end of World War II, has died.

Ellis, 97, was a Lancaster bomber pilot in the Second World War and then made his debut for the Australian services XI at Lord’s in 1945.

A left- arm spinner who was mentored by Clarrie Grimmett, Ellis played 21 first-class matches for SA, taking 78 wickets.
