Jail guard poisoned in attack
A PRISON officer has been taken to hospital after a suspicious package was found at Yatala Labour Prison.
Emergency crews were called to the prison about 9am yesterday when a tennis ball was discovered in an area inaccessible to prisoners.
The SA Public Service Association says within the tennis ball, which is thought to have been thrown over the prison wall, was white powder.
A male guard suffered convulsions soon after coming into contact with the powder and was rushed to hospital. He is in a stable condition.
The prison was placed into lockdown for several hours as emergency services, including the Metropolitan Fire Service, responded to the contamination.
Public Service Association manager of policy and strategy Austin White said the incident was another reason why prisons should not be privatised.
“Contraband being introduced into prison is a constant cause of concern, our members are trained to detect and deal with this contraband,” Mr White said.
“We expect that staffing numbers and training in privatised prison will be reduced.”
