Sixth win a shear delight for Tait
IN a year of record entries, News Corp has won major prizes at the 2018 South Australian and Northern Territory Rural Media Awards, with journalist Erin Jones and photographer Tait Schmaal recognised for their work.
Schmaal – for the sixth time – was named the Rural Photographer of the Year and also collected the Production Award and the Best Adelaide Show Photograph Award.
“He showed great control and creativity over all subjects, fully using various elements such as expression, composition, lighting, humour, movement, texture and repetition, as well as the ‘cuteness’ factor to create stunning images,” the judges said.
Erin Jones, who is the regional editor for The Advertiser and Sunday Mail, won the Best Rural Print Journalist Award for her body of work on the drought, oyster industry and organic farming.
“Her writing, insight and style were exceptional,” the judges said. “Her story on the devastating effects of drought displayed that a lot of hard work had gone into sourcing multiple viewpoints across a number of primary industry sectors.”
It was the first year of incorporating the Northern Territory into the awards, with Rural Journalist of the Year awarded to ABC Landline journalist Kristy O’Brien, from Darwin.
Major sponsor of the awards is Rural Business Support.
