Time for action

The Advertiser - - LETTERS -

STATE Environment Minister David Speirs’s announcement of the need to ban single-use plastics and shopping bags is welcome news.

However, his proviso “if there is public appetite to do so” and “analysis of the economic and community effects of recommendations will be taken before the State Government takes any further steps” is concerning.

Plastic pollution has created havoc with the environment. Tonnes of global plastic waste have entered the sea, where they break up into a toxic cocktail, poisoning marine life.

Scientists and ecologists warn us we are in the grip of an environmental catastrophe, threatening sustainability of ecosystems and a livable planet for all life, including us.
