Family life suiting Demon Lever

A RECENT newborn has been credited with helping Jake Lever find peak fitness, as the Melbourne defender proved a standout during the Demons’ return to training this week.

Melbourne players were welcomed back to the club with a series of fitness tests on Monday and Lever surprisingly fared better than he had before the AFL season was postponed in March.

Lever and his wife Jessica welcomed their first child, Jace, in February, and teammates have been quick to point out that might be why his fitness levels are so high.

“We had four 1km runs and topped it off with about 7km of skills,” Lever said of Monday’s gruelling session.

“Personally, I’ve been better (than before Round 1). Everyone keeps joking around that it’s probably because I’ve just had a baby and I’ve been trying to get out of the house and run all the time. But personally, I got better, which was fantastic.

“There are other guys that have come back well, too.

“The first 21 players ran really well and it was quite impressive to see. It just proves that everyone’s really eager to get back playing and the seven or eight weeks that we had away, everyone trained really hard and we were able to keep each other accountable.”

IN SHAPE: Melbourne’s Jake Lever trains yesterday.
