Greater trans­parency for oil and gas

THE Fed­eral Gov­ern­ment has is­sued a new set of rules to pro­mote in­creased trans­parency within the off­shore oil and gas sec­tor.

Fed­eral Re­sources and North­ern Aus­tralia minister Matthew Cana­van said the new mea­sures in­cluded hold­ing com­mu­nity in­for­ma­tion ses­sions in ar­eas where pe­tro­leum ac­tiv­i­ties will be per­formed; im­prov­ing pub­lic con­sulta­tion on new off­shore ex­plo­ration ar­eas; es­tab­lish­ing a reg­is­ter of in­ter­ests for stake­hold­ers; pub­lish­ing en­vi­ron­men­tal plans sub­mit­ted by com­pa­nies be­fore they be­gin ac­tiv­i­ties; and invit­ing pub­lic con­sid­er­a­tion of plans.

Mr Cana­van said the Gov­ern­ment was also con­sid­er­ing mak­ing changes to the trans­parency, com­pli­ance and en­force­ment ac­tiv­i­ties car­ried out by the off­shore pe­tro­leum in­dus­try safety au­thor­ity, NOPSEMA.
