Speed the key for power stations

-

ENERGY Power Systems Australia (EPSA) undertakes the fast mobilisation, set-up and commissioning of power stations across Australia.

Business development manager Terry Knott said rapid deployment was important because it reduces risk of delays or shutdowns, therefore decreasing the potential costs involved in lost operational days.

EPSA is the trusted advisor for multi-megawatt rapid deployment power stations.

They combine all internal capabilities to ensure mines stay fully operational.

The services EPSA provide include electrical engineering, onsite technicians, logistics support and operations.

EPSA’s deployment capability has resulted in responsive deployment of power stations around Australia.

Mr Knott said that in November 2017, a mining customer suffered a mechanical tap changer fault that caused one of its main transformers to explode.

The loss of the transformer put a large amount of pressure on its back-up generator, which also suffered slight damage due to its proximity to the explosion and fire.

With the lead-time for ordering a new transformer around five months, the client identified an unused 20MVA 11kV to 33kV transformer in an unused switchyard on their mining lease.

Energising the spare transformer would reduce the pressure and high risk of failure on the back-up transformer.

“This is where EPSA stepped in with a full turnkey temporary power solution,” Mr Knott said.

“Our team combined all internal capabilities – from electrical engineering and technicians to logistics and operations to ensure our client remained fully operational.”

EPSA was awarded the project to supply 16 x 1500kVA generator 415v to 11kV for a period of 90 days to maintain the power station in full operation from late- January 2018.

“EPSA’s rapid deployment capability has resulted in responsive deployment of power stations around Australia by our rental team,” Mr Knott said.

EPSA is a leader in rapid deployment of multi MW power stations.

The company partners with businesses to find the best through-life cost benefit solution.

EPSA began in 1992 with the amalgamation of Cat power systems from the regional Australian Cat dealers into one single national Cat engine company.

The company can cater for every power generation requirement: continuous power, prime power, standby power, cogeneration, trigeneration, peaking power and a range of bio-fuel applications from land fill gas to coal seam gas to waste gas EPSA also provides the new Cat Hybrid Microgrid System and Energy Storage solution that integrates traditional energy sources with wind, solar and biogas.

As the authorised Caterpillar supplier, EPSA has the options to rent or buy new or used Cat power systems anywhere around Australia, Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands.

EPSA delivers technically superior Cat engines with unmatched engineering support, technical advice and after-sales support through the Cat network.
