Ban­garra be­gins a national tour of its new dance-theatre work, Blak, at the Arts Cen­tre, Melbourne. Chore­ographed by Stephen Page and Daniel Ri­ley McKin­ley, Blak is based on sto­ries of cul­ture, lan­guage and sur­vival in the ur­ban world. John Stan­ton brings tragic sales­man Willy Lo­man to life in a Black Swan Theatre pro­duc­tion of Deatho­faSales­man, State Theatre Cen­tre, Perth. Aus­tralian jazz gui­tar vir­tu­oso and com­poser Al­bare per­forms tracks from his in­ter­na­tion­ally suc­cess­ful CD, Long­Way, at the Syd­ney Opera House. Melbourne’s thriv­ing in­de­pen­dent theatre mak­ers are cel­e­brated in MTC’s Neon Fes­ti­val of In­de­pen­dent Theatre, which opens with by Daniel Schlusser En­sem­ble, based on the work of Ten­nessee Wil­liams.

Movie stars such as Mar­i­lyn Mon­roe, James Dean and El­iz­a­beth Tay­lor are cap­tured in 116 in­ti­mate por­traits taken be­hind the scenes in Mag­num On Set — A Mag­num Pho­tos Tour­ing Ex­hi­bi­tion at the State Li­brary, Syd­ney. The Aus­tralian Ballet brings triple bill Sym­me­tries to Can­berra to cel­e­brate the cap­i­tal’s cen­te­nary. The pro­gram in­cludes Mon­u­ment, a new work cre­ated by Aus­tralian Dance Theatre’s Garry Ste­wart as an ode to Par­lia­ment House. En­joy Mon­day,Mon­day and Cal­i­for­ni­aDreamin’ all over again as Flow­er­chil­dren — the story of the Ma­mas and the Pa­pas — re­turns to Melbourne. The award­win­ning mu­si­cal stars Casey Dono­van as the tragic Mama Cass. See draw­ings, sculp­tures, col­lages (see be­low) and videos by Kenyan-born, New York-based artist Wangechi Mutu in a sur­vey ex­hi­bi­tion at the Mu­seum of Con­tem­po­rary Art, Syd­ney. Vivid LIVE is a 10day cel­e­bra­tion of mu­sic at the Syd­ney Opera House that in­cludes multi-me­dia con­certs by Ger­man elec­tronic pi­o­neers Kraftwerk and the ex­tra­or­di­nary in­dige­nous singer Gur­ru­mul. The Bol­shoi Ballet opens its first sea­son in Aus­tralia for al­most two decades with LeCor­saire, a swash-buck­ling pi­rate tale, at QPAC, Bris­bane. Ex­pe­ri­ence mod­ern masters of jazz at Melbourne In­ter­na­tional Jazz Fes­ti­val, which in­cludes 25 free events. Head­lin­ers in­clude leg­endary vo­cal­ist Cassandra Wil­son, Latin jazz ex­po­nent Chu­cho Valdes, big-band com­poser Maria Sch­nei­der and sax­o­phon­ist James Carter.
