Coleslaw is an anglicisation of the Dutch meaning “cabbage salad”, which Dutch settlers brought to the US. It was originally made with vinaigrette - the version we’re most familiar with was a relatively late arrival, as mayonnaise wasn’t invented until the 18th century. Our version teams vinegar with the mayonnaise.
