Q I have been enjoying green smoothies with spinach, beetroot and fruit. Is blended fruit and vegetables as good for me as cooked or steamed? L.F., Vic.

The main priority is to include a variety of di erent coloured vegetables in your diet. These can be chopped raw, included in a smoothie or cooked, depending on your taste and ability to digest raw foods.

Q My hair is getting thin and dry. Is there anything I can do to help it? I’m 72. D.B., Vic.

A medical check will identify any causes such as hypothyroidism, anaemia, the side-e ects of medication and nutritional deficiency. See a dietitian to address any potential nutrient deficiencies. Use a natural dry hair shampoo and avoid harsh chemicals such as bleaches. Limit the use of hair dryers. A regular scalp massage may help improve circulation to your hair follicles.

Q My son is 10 and his diet isn’t great, although he does like milk. Should he be having full-cream milk, for the nutrients, or skim milk? J.Z., Qld.

It is important to address his overall diet. Remember that you are in control of meals and snacks, at least when he is at home. As for the milk, babies are transitioned to whole milk at one year of age and whole milk is recommended until the age of two. After that, gradually switch your son to reduced fat or skim milk.

Q I’m 53 and feel as if I’m starting to be a bit forgetful. I read this could be menopause, which I am going through. Will it stop? M.C., NSW.

The hormone changes of menopause can cause a degree of forgetfulness which may be benign and temporary. This can be worse in times of stress and it may improve as your hormones settle. If the problem is worsening, it is important to consult your GP, as the incidence of cognitive impairment and dementia increases with age.

Q I keep on experiencing vaginal itchiness. I am 62 and know it’s not a sexually transmitted disease. I imagine it’s just the warm weather. Is there a cream you can suggest? D.R., WA.

The most likely cause of your itch is a candida infection, which can be treated with an anti-fungal cream or a single dose of an anti-fungal medicine called Fluconazole. It could be dermatitis, which would need a steroid cream. There are combination steroid/anti-fungal creams available. It’s important to get the diagnosis right with a visit to your doctor, who will examine the area and advise you on the right treatment.

Q How often should I have a hearing test and are they free? T.M., Tas.

Hearing is tested in childhood if a problem is suspected, such as delayed speech. In older years, hearing is tested when there’s a perception of hearing di culty. Some clinics provide free testing and there’s a Medicare rebate for audiology with a GP referral and chronic disease management plan.
