She has been hailed a mum in a million, a parent role model for her utter acceptance of transgende­r son Kai’s coming out. Yet if you ask Yolanda Bogert to note a favourite outcome of the birth notice she placed in the Queensland Courier Mail in 2014: “A Retraction: In 1995 we announced the arrival of our sprogget, Elizabeth Anne, as a daughter … we were mistaken … we would like to present our wonderful son”, she would simply cite the woman who wrote to say that Kai’s talking on TV had moved her to get back in touch with her estranged trans-daughter. The birth notice had gone viral and Kai, who “didn’t understand what all the fuss was about”, was coaxed on The Project. His loving mum describes her fears watching her boy set o .
