It’s Delhi in 1947 and Lord Mountbatten ( Downton Abbey’s Hugh Bonneville) has arrived with his wife, Lady Edwina (Gillian Anderson, both above), as the last Viceroy of India, there to oversee the transition to independence. A lush period drama, with many subplots. Opens May 18.
20TH CENTURY WOMEN
A poignant paean to womanhood set in California in 1979. Annette Bening shines as a divorcée trying to connect with her teenage son. She asks her punk photographer tenant (Greta Gerwig) and young neighbour (Elle Fanning, above) to help, but is stunned at what happens next. Opens June 1.
