VICEROY’S HOUSE

It’s Delhi in 1947 and Lord Mountbatte­n ( Downton Abbey’s Hugh Bonneville) has arrived with his wife, Lady Edwina (Gillian Anderson, both above), as the last Viceroy of India, there to oversee the transition to independen­ce. A lush period drama, with many subplots. Opens May 18.

20TH CENTURY WOMEN

A poignant paean to womanhood set in California in 1979. Annette Bening shines as a divorcée trying to connect with her teenage son. She asks her punk photograph­er tenant (Greta Gerwig) and young neighbour (Elle Fanning, above) to help, but is stunned at what happens next. Opens June 1.
