EDITOR’S LETTER: from the desk of The Weekly’s Nicole Byers
My husband Tom has kept every edition of The Weekly since I became Editor-in-Chief. He proudly announced this month that the pile is 12 issues high, marking my one-year anniversary in this iconic chair. He believes they are important to keep not only as a career milestone, but as a record of the important stories of the time to share with our daughter Ellery when her reading progresses beyond The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
There have been plenty of highlights since joining The Weekly, from exclusive cover stories with Aussie legends like Olivia Newton-John and Nicole Kidman, to our Women of The Future campaign and last month’s emotive tell-all with Natalie Joyce, the reaction to which has been nothing short of astounding (page 10). However, the only time I’ve managed to impress Ellery was by featuring her in an Easter Craft story – and that was only because there were chocolate eggs and real-life bunnies involved.
That all changed this month with our story on Emma Watkins, otherwise known as The Yellow Wiggle (page 76). Like many three year olds, Ellery is a devotee of the all-singing, all-dancing children’s entertainment phenomenon that is The Wiggles, and particularly loves bow wearing Emma’s ballet segments. Learning more about Emma – from her professional achievements and personal health battle to her truly special relationship with her mother – I’m pleased she’s one of Ellery’s early role models. There are plenty of other women to admire in this issue, from Hollywood royalty in Glenn Close (page 68) and Jane Fonda (page 16) to the tiara-wearing variety, including our awe-inspiring cover woman Crown Princess Mary (page 24). Enjoy.
