ACHIEVING HER DREAMS

-

MADISON MITCHELL, 19, is one of almost four million people in Australia with a disability. She has cerebral palsy, an intellectual disability and epilepsy. Over the years her parents hoped one day she’d be able to nd a job and a purpose. When Maddy had nearly nished school they attended a careers session. There they were introduced to APM, Australia’s largest provider of disability employment services. With more than 20 years’ experience assisting more than 1 million Australians with an injury, illness or disability, APM found Maddy a job that makes her smile and she hasn’t looked back. “APM offered everything to Maddy we never would have imagined she’d be able to receive. She’s blossoming now,” says Maddy’s mum, Sharon. “They really listen to you.” APM also puts jobseekers in touch with local employers willing to give people with disability a go. One such employer was Marlin Swim School in Victoria. APM approached the school to discuss the possibility of taking Maddy on board. Employed on a trial basis, Maddy’s con dence grew so much she has since completed her AUSTSWIM course and is now a swimming instructor. “We’ve been blown away by what she’s achieved with APM,” says Sharon. “A job to me is knowing I can stand on my own two feet,” says Maddy.
