The finishing touch is a sun-free, overnight self-tan. “Plan your tan ahead of time,” says Jayne Cooper, St Tropez Tanning and Skin Finishing Expert. “Do any hair removal 24 hours before to ensure pores have closed.” Open pores can leave brown tint or dots on the skin. “Shaving can create micro-cuts which tanning lotion can irritate. The day before tanning also exfoliate skin to remove dead skin cells and provide an even base to tan.

“Before you tan, remove any products, and moisturise dry areas such as hands, elbows, knees and feet to prevent over tanning,” she advises. “Chose your tanning product on the depth of colour you want. Some tans develop over eight hours and can be slept in overnight for a deep bronze.” For even application use a mitt.
