Neither cranberry juice nor supplement­s are better than a placebo in treating urinary tract infections, but keeping hydrated is now thought to be effective as it could prevent bacteria sticking to the bladder lining. An alkaliser, such as bi-carb soda in water, can also make urine less acidic and help clear infection.
