FRONT DESK
Mia Tang, 10, moved to America for a better life, but so far she has ended up running the front desk of a motel while Mum and Dad clean the rooms. A smart, valuable debut from Yang’s own real-life experience of emigrating to the US from China, where her parents ran a motel. Facing language barriers, discrimination, school bullying, unfair wages and lack of confidence, Yang’s little family have a lot to learn if they are going to settle and succeed in their new home. Mia is not even allowed to swim in the motel pool.
