We may crave rest but it’s crucial to keep active as we age if we want to feel our best. So start moving!

We e all know that exercise is good for us, but have missed the boat? “Various studies show that it is never too late to get fit. Our bodies respond to exercise no matter what our age,” says Michael Cunico, Head of Fitness at Fitness First. “Although long-term physical activity may be important to lower mortality risk, evidence shows that becoming physically active later in adulthood (40, 50, 60 or 70) may provide comparable health benefits.” Start today, the science says, and you will see improvements in your energy, mood, sleep, body composition, fitness and more.

How to get started

Once you have the all clear from your GP, over to you. “You are more likely to keep up an exercise routine if it’s fun,” says Rani Foreman, Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP) at aged-care provider Feros Care. “Do you love dancing? Dancing is fantastic for your balance and co-ordination. Do you love nature? Join a walking group in your community to stay active outdoors. Your intention should be to do something that makes you feel good and have more energy. The idea of ‘more moving and less sitting’ can be an easy adjustment.”

If you still don’t know where to start, look for local classes run by AEPs. These offer a safe, nurturing environment to start exercising in, as well as motivational support. One caveat: you will get sore muscles, warns Rani. “This will subside as your body adjusts and you’ll have a lovely boost of energy. However, do contact your AEP or GP for abnormal soreness or pain.”

Get back on your feet

“Injury, illness and life happen. During these times it’s perfectly fine to slow down and let yourself recover,” says Michael. “Focus on what you can do, particularly flexibility exercises which help prevent injury and reduce pain. Lock in some time for stretching or a couple of yoga classes a week. You can also focus on nutrition

– a healthy balanced diet is extremely important for healing and overall health.”
