Questions to ask when appointing a power of attorney

- Source: moneysmart.gov.au.

What type of appointment are you making?

You can appoint a general power of attorney to make legal and financial decisions on your behalf for a specified period of time, a medical power of attorney to make medical decisions, or an enduring power of attorney who can make decisions for you if you become incapacitated. Who would best serve this role? Choose someone trustworthy and financially responsible, who will be around to execute your wishes.

What else should I do? It’s important to have a discussion with your family so they understand your wishes. You can prepare supporting documents, such as a living will, to help your legal appointees. If in doubt, seek legal advice.
