ASK THE DOCTOR

- With PROFESSOR KERRYN PHELPS

QMy teenage son had some strong knee pain after football training. He did the RICE treatment (rest, ice, compression, elevation) and it subsided but keeps returning. Does he need a scan? G.T., Qld. A recurring knee pain needs to be investigated. Your GP will examine his knee and advise what investigation is best. Depending on the result, he may refer your son to a physiotherapist, sports medicine physician or orthopaedic surgeon.

QFor the past two years I’ve had debilitating heavy and painful periods. I’m 40 now and my tummy feels big and sore each month. Shouldn’t my periods be tailing off at this age? D.M., SA.

The average age of menopause is just over 50. Your symptoms sound more like endometriosis. Your GP will arrange investigations, including a pelvic ultrasound.

You may need a laparoscopy to confirm the diagnosis.

QI have asthma, allergic rhinitis, dermatitis and sinusitis. Over the last few months I have developed a cough, as well as bad hearing. What could be the cause? L.B., Tas. Don’t assume the cough or hearing problem are related to your allergies. Have your hearing checked urgently. Your GP will need to check your cough and investigate.

QI developed back pain a few months ago and my GP thought it may be due to a heavy bag. She suggested over the counter pain relief. However, the aches keep moving around and I’m also getting numbness in my feet. Is there an underlying issue? A.A., WA. The numbness in both feet suggests peripheral neuropathy, and there are many possible causes for this nerve damage. The aches that keep moving around are not likely to be caused by a single back injury. Your symptoms will need to be investigated by your GP.

QI’ve always had good skin, apart from some eczema. I started a cortisone cream a few months ago and after two tubes I got a sore, red rash around my mouth – it’s now on my forehead. I stopped the cream but it won’t go away. What can I do? N.P., Vic.

It is likely that the rash is perioral dermatitis. It can be caused (not relieved) by prolonged use of steroid creams. Use a soap substitute to cleanse your face. Your GP will prescribe a topical antibiotic such as clindamycin lotion.

QSix months ago I had a fall, resulting in a huge haematoma on my leg. I’m planning a long-haul flight and I’ve heard this can cause blood clots. Is this true? M.G., Tas.

The haematoma is not related to a blood clot (deep vein thrombosis or DVT), which can be caused by long periods of sitting, such as a long plane flight. To reduce your risk of DVT wear compression stockings, move around regularly, avoid crossing your legs, wear loose clothing, keep your fluids up and avoid alcohol.
