Vale Olivia de Havilland

-

ONE OF THE LAST legends of the Golden Age of Hollywood, Olivia de Havilland has been remembered as a “lioness” of the screen. The actress got her big break when she was cast opposite Errol Flynn in Captain Blood in 1935, and rose to fame as Melanie Hamilton in 1939’s Gone With the Wind. She was the last surviving star of the Civil War epic when she passed away in Paris, aged 104. Despite the acclaim she received for her portrayal of Melanie, Olivia continued to be offered timid roles, when she longed for something more dramatic. After Warner Brothers penalised her for turning down roles by adding time to her contract, she sued the studio, creating a precedent known as De Havilland Law, which gave studio actors more control over their careers.
