SUEZ CANAL, EGYPT Billion-dollar traffic jam

It was the gridlock that mesmerised the world. The Ever Given, a 221,000-ton ship, got stuck in the Suez Canal after running aground during high winds. It caused a 165 vessel pile-up, halted global trade and cost billions before being freed by tugs and a very meme-worthy digger.

THE ANTARCTIC Lucky feet

One penguin narrowly avoided becoming dinner by jumping into a boat full of tourists in the Antarctic. The Gentoo penguin was being pursued by a pod of killer whales before it spotted the boat and made its lucky escape – an experience straight out of a nature documentar­y for the surprised tourists on board.

ICELAND

Mother Nature’s beauty Hikers get up close to Iceland’s Fagradalsf­jall volcano. Two weeks after its eruption, the volcano is attracting people from the nearby city of Reykjavik in droves.
