Winter make-up 101

Subtle seasonal changes to your morning beauty routine will deliver radiant results.

Switch your primer

If you’re a believer in priming (which extends the life of your base and keeps skin concerns like shine and dullness in check), switch to a luminous formula over a matte one throughout winter. Elizabeth Arden’s new primer has hydrating ingredients, as well as polymers that improve the finish of your foundation. TRY: Elizabeth Arden Flawless Start Hydrating Serum Primer, $50.

Highlight skin with liquids

Radiance is harder to achieve in winter. A liquid highlighter is an easy fix, giving skin a quick and natural-looking glow. Apply in the usual spots: brow bone, the high point of cheeks and a little down the nose. TRY: Napoleon Perdis Light Thief Liquid Highlight in What a Peach, $55.

Add moisture … constantly

Spritzing is a great way to give skin a hit of hydration over make-up, not to mention a pleasant pick-me-up when energy levels are flagging. TRY: Jurlique Rosewater Balancing Mist, $52.

Sweet cheeks

If you want a more natural flush, consider switching your powder blush for a cream formula when the weather cools. Dab onto your apples to give skin a healthy glow or have it work double-duty as a pop of colour on your lips and eyelids. TRY: Natio Cream Blush in Dusk, $15.95 (top) or Stila Convertible Color in Gerbera, $38.

Wear base with benefits

In autumn and winter, switching to a foundation with a slightly creamier base and nourishing, long-lasting ingredients will ensure skin looks radiant and feels more comfortable throughout the day. Revlon’s Light Cover Foundation is a super-hydrating formula that allows you to build coverage only where you need it most. You can expect skin tone that is more even and balanced overall, but with a natural-looking finish. TRY: Revlon Colorstay Light Cover Foundation, $20.
