Listen up
Research shows we’re not very good at listening. Only 10 per cent of us listen effectively because we’re so distracted, and we tend to tune out those close to us because we think we already know what they’re going to say. Active listening is a skill worth working on, as it has multiple benefits. It helps us to improve relationships by increasing trust and reducing conflict, and understand and connect with others on a deeper level.
So, how can I listen up?
Be attentive and maintain eye contact;
Ask questions;
Don’t interrupt or offer advice unless sought; Don’t jump to conclusions; Be aware of body language; Wait for pauses before talking.
