Flower power

Ali Matkowsky, founder of Melbourne-based dried floristry service Milla Rose (millarose.com.au) advises how best to make your own everlasting blooms at home.

1. Select flowers from your local florist or even your own backyard. I recommend choosing ample foliage such as eucalyptus to add volume to the bouquet, as well as some feature flowers.

2. Carefully remove any excess foliage from flower stems. If you like the look of some of the greenery, leave this as they will dry as well. Cut the stems to your desired length.

3. Tie flower stems together with a string or rubber band. Then, find a dark and dry room or closet that has good circulation. Secure stems upside down to a hanger and leave to dry for 1-2 weeks.

4. Once dried, remove flowers from the hanger and lightly spray with hairspray to protect delicate blooms. Arrange in a vase or bouquet for a thoughtful homemade gift.

Ali's tip

“Keep your dried flowers out of direct sunlight, wind and humidity. This will ensure they last for years.”
